Most “online file repair” sites make you upload the file to their servers first. This checker doesn't. The same Rust assessment code that ships inside the DataRecover Pro Mac app is compiled to WebAssembly and runs on your machine. The bytes are read into your browser's memory, inspected, and discarded when you close the tab. There is no upload, no account, and no server involved — you can watch the network panel to confirm it.

It analyses files up to 256 MiB. Larger videos and PDFs, and the actual repair, are what the desktop app is for.

What it checks

JPEG

Start/end-of-image markers, scan data, EXIF segment, Huffman tables, marker chains at odd offsets.

PNG

8-byte signature, IHDR / IDAT / IEND chunks, per-chunk CRCs, chunk ordering, orphaned zlib streams.

GIF

GIF87a/89a header, logical screen descriptor, block chain, trailer byte.

MP4 / MOV

ftyp, moov (movie index) and mdat atoms, atom-size consistency, chunk-offset tables (stco/co64), raw H.264/HEVC frames.

PDF

%PDF- header, object table, xref consistency, trailer, startxref pointer, %%EOF, stream lengths, dangling references.

Word (.docx)

ZIP local headers, central directory, end-of-central-directory record, prepended junk, Office Open XML parts.

How to read the verdict

Healthy: Every structural marker the format requires is present and consistent. If the file still won't open, suspect the app, a bad copy, or a wrong extension — the checker flags extension mismatches too.
Repairable: The container is damaged but the content is intact. The standard repair tier rewrites headers, tables, or indexes with no data loss.
Partially repairable: Part of the structure or data is missing. The deep-scan and extraction tiers rebuild a working file from what survives — expect some loss.
Not repairable as-is: Too little structure is left to rebuild this format. The salvage tier can still pull out embedded previews, media, and text.
